Exodus Outline

D. L. Webster

Exodus records the establishment of Israel as a nation. Genesis ends with one extended family in Egypt. By the end of Exodus there is a whole nation with one specific God, the basics of the Law, and a system of worship in place. Everything in Exodus is a part of God establishing Israel as his people. First, he reveals his name. Then through the plagues and the Sea of Reeds, God differentiates himself from all of the other gods common at that time. He shows that he is the only god with true power, and therefore the only true God. God provides for the people in the desert, makes a covenant with them, gives them laws, and finally gives instructions for the means of worship: the tabernacle, altar, priests, etc. For those of us looking back on these events after the fact, it is difficult to remember how all of this was new, and realize how significant all of this was. God had not revealed himself this much and become this close to humanity since perhaps the "Fall".
